An Heirloom

I was recently contacted by a customer who wanted to know if I could design a piece for her daughter using pearls that had been collected over the course of the girl's life by her aunt.  She had 33 4mm pearls, and five 6mm pearls and wanted something a little funkier and more personalized than just "a strand of pearls."  She wanted a necklace that was dainty, in shades of gray and blue, and long enough to be worn as a single strand or doubled with the clasp pulled around to the front.  The resulting necklace is the jewelry equivalent to a quilt, made with a combination of patterns and materials.  We debated for some time on which clasp would be best, and here are photos that I emailed to show the options:

Once we agreed on the hook and eye, the necklace was finished, tagged (with all of the names of the various stones used), gift bagged and handed off.  It was presented as a college graduation gift, and here is the email I found in my inbox on Monday morning:

Custom 33" necklace made with pearls, blue calcite, amazonite, labradorite, grey moonstone, rainbow moonstone, clear quartz, cat's eye, aquamarine, and a sterling silver clasp.

 Hi!
I just wanted you to know how incredibly happy E was with the necklace...I'm sure she'll be contacting you herself.  We were at dinner with the family Friday night when P presented it to her...she loved it immediately but, when she realized that it contained "her pearls," the tears began to flow.  She put it on immediately, and wore it all weekend...it's clear that all of our planning was worth it!!  Love, J
